Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to diamonds, most people think of the natural ones- the stones formed deep within the earth over billions of years. But over the last few decades, lab-grown diamonds have carved out a solid space in the jewelry world.

Lab-grown diamonds look the same, feel the same, and even test the same as natural diamonds—but they come from a very different origin, a lab.

So, ultimately, man made vs natural, the question becomes: what’s the real difference? And is one better than the other?

In this article, we’ll help break it down simply and honestly, so you can decide which one makes the most sense for you.

Origins: Earth vs. Lab

The main difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds is where they come from.

Natural diamonds come from the Earth. They’re created when carbon is exposed to extreme heat and pressure about 100 miles below the Earth’s surface. This process can take millions to even billions of years. Once formed, volcanic eruptions bring them closer to the surface, where they can be mined.

Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are made in a controlled laboratory environment. Scientists replicate the same conditions found underground. High pressure and high temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are two methods used currently to create lab grown stones. With modern technology,  , these diamonds are grown in a matter of weeks, instead of waiting millions of years.

Despite the difference in origin, lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They are virtually indistinguishable from their mined counterparts.

Physical and Chemical Properties

One of the most commonly asked questions is: Are lab-grown diamonds real?

The answer is yes.

Both types of diamonds have the same chemical composition (pure carbon) and the same crystal structure. They also score a 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making them equally durable and suitable for everyday wear.

If you were to look at a natural and a lab-grown diamond side by side, even trained gemologists can’t tell them apart without special equipment. They have the same sparkle, brilliance, fire, and overall look.

However, natural diamonds often contain small traces of nitrogen or other elements, while lab-grown diamonds may have metallic inclusions from the manufacturing process.

These differences are invisible to the naked eye but can be picked up with advanced testing tools. Also, know that even with their minimal differences, their costs can differ greatly – which will be discussed below.

How They’re Certified

Whether a diamond is natural or lab-grown, reputable gem labs, the Gemological Institute of America, grades them using the same 4Cs: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight.

The only distinction is in how they’re labeled. For example:

A natural diamond might be listed as “Diamond.”

A lab-grown diamond will be listed as “Laboratory-Grown Diamond” or “Synthetic Diamond” (though most labs now avoid the word “synthetic” due to confusion).

Certificates also specify the diamond’s origin. So when you’re comparing diamonds, make sure you’re looking at apples-to-apples—meaning, comparing diamonds of the same origin, size, and quality.

Cost Differences

This is where lab-grown diamonds really stand out.

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 30–70% less than natural diamonds of the same size and quality.

That’s a huge price difference—and it can make a big impact if you’re shopping for an engagement ring or a larger statement piece.
Now the question is: why the lower cost?

It comes down to supply and production. Natural diamonds are limited by what can be mined, which takes time and resources. Furthermore, they’re rare – about 200-250 tons of raw ore needs to be mined to create a 1 carat natural stone.

Lab-grown diamonds can be produced on demand, in greater numbers, and more quickly. That availability drives the price down.
To give a general example:

A 1-carat natural diamond might cost $5,000.

A 1-carat lab-grown diamond of similar quality could be around $1,500 to $2,500.

Of course, prices fluctuate depending on cut, color, and clarity, but the savings are usually significant.

Rarity and Long-Term Value

Here’s where natural diamonds hold an edge: rarity and resale value.

Because natural diamonds took billions of years to form and are limited in supply, they have a certain intrinsic rarity. For many people, that adds emotional and symbolic value—especially when marking a major life milestone.

Natural diamonds also tend to hold their value better over time. While no diamond is truly an investment (unless you’re dealing in rare or collectible stones), the resale market favors natural diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, may depreciate faster, simply because they’re easier and cheaper to reproduce.

If you’re thinking long-term or hoping to pass your diamond down through generations, it’s worth considering how each type may be valued in the future.

Final Thoughts

Whether you choose lab-grown or natural, you’ll have access to a wide range of shapes, sizes, and qualities. Both types can be set in all the traditional styles—solitaire, halo, pavé, three-stone—and used in engagement rings, earrings, necklaces, and more.

That said, lab-grown diamonds can make it easier (and more affordable) to customize or go bigger with your design. If your dream ring features a 2-carat oval or a matched set of stones, lab-grown options may let you do that within your budget.

Ultimately, diamonds—no matter their origin—are more accessible and customizable than ever before.

Thanks to innovation and evolving preferences, you now have more options to express your style and celebrate important moments. Whether you prefer the enduring value and rarity of a natural diamond or the cost efficiency of a lab-grown stone, you’re still getting a beautiful gem that can be worn and cherished for years to come. And that, more than anything, is what really matters.
