Jewelry Soldering FAQ

Jewelry soldering is a repair technique that joins two different broken pieces of jewelry together with the use of high temperatures – a torch – and solder, a special alloy.

In the soldering process, the solder – an alloy with a lower melting point than the original piece – is heated to a malleable form, so that it can be mended to fuse the broken pieces together.

Once cooled, the heated alloy hardens into a solid metal, joining the broken pieces together at the break point with a strong finish. The end result? The piece jewelry being restored to its original form.

Most pieces of broken jewelry can be soldered back together – there are two things to keep in mind that may pose some limitations, though:

  1. How clean the break is
  2. The original metal of the piece

Break Point

If the piece of jewelry that’s been broken has a clean break between both pieces, soldering them back together usually poses no issues. If the break is complex, however, soldering the pieces back together can be difficult, if not impossible altogether.

The important thing about break points is to have enough surface area to work with. In complex breaks with jagged pieces, there may not be enough area to create a strong solder joint to fuse the broken pieces together. Furthermore, in complex breaks aligning the pieces together to restore the original dimensions of the piece may prove difficult.

This all being said, if it’s not viable to solder your jewelry back together, a suitable alternative would be to have it redesigned into a new piece.

Repairing broken pieces of jewelry together successfully depends on two main factors: how clean the original break is, and the metal type of the original piece.

Metal Type

In addition to the break, when it comes to the possibility of soldering repairs, it’s also important to consider the type of metal of the original piece.

Due to their chemical composition, certain metals don’t fuse well with solder alloys, leading to a compromised joint. An example of this is tungsten.

Please know that the majority of fine jewelry is made with either silver or gold, both of which are metals that can be broken and soldered back together relatively easily.

At TeLayne Designs, we can solder back a variety of different pieces, these include but are not limited to:

  • Rings
  • Earrings
  • Bracelets
  • Bangles
  • Chains
  • Necklaces
  • Pendants
