Ring Resizing FAQ

As time passes, our bodies undergo various changes that can cause fluctuations in our finger size. Daily factors such as salt intake and hydration, as well as longer-term changes like weight fluctuations or seasonal shifts, can all affect the size of our fingers.

The exact techniques and processes used to resize rings depends on the piece at hand, but the general procedures for resizing a ring up or down are as follows:

Resizing Up
For resizing a ring up, the typical protocol is to cut the ring’s band, and solder in metal in between the cut. This results in a larger band, which then is appropriately shaped to its original shape.

Resizing Down
For resizing a ring down, the general procedure involves making two incisions on the ring’s band, and then taking the metal from between the incisions out. The two ends of the shank are then soldered together, resulting in a ring with a smaller circumference. Like with sizing the ring up, once soldered together, the ring’s shape is then appropriately shaped so it retains its original shape.

For sizing rings up or down, each process ends with polishing and buffing, so you can be sure that your piece looks its best.

In general, resizing a ring typically does not result in any visible marks. However, in certain cases where a ring is composed of a unique metal, we may need to source a similar but slightly different metal for resizing. As a result, there might be a faint band of a slightly different color at the resizing location, due to the subtle differences in the alloy used.

Most resizing projects can be done within a week, and in some cases even sooner. To get a more accurate estimation of timeframes, it’s best to get in touch with our team.

When it comes to resizing, the possible range of size changes depends on your ring’s design.

If your ring has a simple design where the shank is free of gemstones, resizing up or down multiple sizes is often possible.

If your ring has a more complex arrangement, however, such as those seen with pave settings or those that are tension set, resizing altogether may prove challenging.

While resizing to multiple sizes is doable, it’s important to note, we typically don’t recommend resizing up or down more than two sizes. This is to ensure that the integrity of the ring’s shank isn’t compromised. There are always exceptions to this, of course.

During your resizing consultation process, the TeLayne Designs team will clearly outline what’s possible for resizing your ring, and walk you through the process and expectations.
